Background:

The Diverse Learning Environments Survey (DLE ) was developed by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) and was administered to UCLA undergraduates during the 2011 Winter & Spring Quarters. The DLE is part of a nationwide initiative to assess the needs and advance the success of a diverse student population.

The DLE survey stems from research indicating that optimizing diversity in the learning environment can facilitate achievement of key outcomes, including improving students' motivations for lifelong learning, competencies and skills for living in diverse society, and student retention and success. The DLE integrates assessments of student outcomes, campus climate for diversity, and campus practices, and allows for a more complete and targeted understanding of how to improve student learning development. This information will help UCLA administrators, faculty, and staff continue to move forward toward the goal of ensuring all students are well-served to be successful and to maximize the benefits of diverse learning environments.
