COOPERATIVE INSTITUTIONAL RESEARCH PROGRAM(CIRP) FRESHMAN SURVEY

Participants:		Incoming first year (i.e., direct entry) students
Content:	Student characteristics including parental income and education, ethnicity, and other demographic items; Financial aid High school achievement and activities Expectations for college Educational and career goals and plans Values, attitudes, beliefs, and self-concept
Type of Data Collection:		Paper and pencil survey
Administration Schedule:		Annually, during freshman summer orientation
Background:		The CIRP Freshman Survey is a national survey sponsored by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) that is completed by over 400,000 entering students at approximately 700 higher education institutions. The information collected via this survey provides valuable baseline data about our new student population. Further, since UCLA has participated in the CIRP Freshman Survey for over 30 years, we have collected valuable information on trends over time.

Who's Coming to Campus: UCLA Freshmen 2008

This student profile provides a summary of 2008 freshman cohort including diversity experiences; preparation for intergroup relations; political and social views; religious and spiritual beliefs; expectations, goals, and aspirations; academic background; finances and work; reasons for choosing UCLA; and emotional, psychological, and physical health.

Summary of 2008 Freshman Survey Technology Use

This brief provides a summary of respondents’ internet use during the past year (prior to beginning UCLA), comfort and proficiency with online activities, and use of social networking sites.

Using 30 Years of Institutional Data to Discover Critical Trends Among Freshmen

This article provides an empirical portrait of critical trends and emerging issues among the student population entering the university directly from high school. It addresses the following questions: 1. What are the characteristics of the current cohort of students entering the university in the following areas: (a) demographic characteristics, (b) high school experiences, (c) academic preparation and degree aspirations, (d) expectations for college, (e) personal skills and abilities, (f) attitudes and values, and (g) career interests? 2. Have responses to the CIRP Freshman Survey over the past 30 years revealed significant shifts in students’ perspectives and profiles in each of those seven areas?

2006 CIRP Freshman Survey Highlights

This report provides a summary of UCLA’s first-time, full-time freshmen who matriculated in the fall of 2006, in the following areas: demographic characteristics; reasons for coming to UCLA; expectations for college; students’ preparation for global citizenship, intergroup relations; current emotional and psychological well-being; previous and expected participation in diversity-related experiences; self-rated proficiency with technology; and parental involvement.
