Appendix: UCUES 2004 Questions and Response Options by Subject Area

INTRODUCTION
UCUES 2004 was the third in a series of spring surveys of the eight University of California undergraduate campuses. As part of a larger collaborative project entitled ‘The Student Experience in the Research University–21st Century’ (SERU21), UCUES offers a rare in-depth examination of the undergraduate experience at the University of California. As such, it offers UCLA administrators, faculty, and students an opportunity both to closely examine campus life at UCLA and to compare it to the UC system as a whole. Results can be viewed through many lenses, such as by major, by college or school, by class standing, by entry status (direct/transfer), and by student characteristics (gender, race/ethnicity, first language).

The survey addresses student academic and co-curricular engagement and activities, as well as utilization and assessment of student services and the overall UC experience. Questions about student background (such as country of origin and parents’ birthplace) provide insight into our students’ cultural identities.

This report provides an overview of the UCUES 2004 project and the basic results that it produced. Other summaries and analyses will be produced subsequently as well.

Planning process: Campus institutional researchers worked cooperatively with faculty and with staff at the UC Office of the President to develop a survey design. At UCLA, development and implementation of the UCUES 2004 survey was a collaboration among institutional research offices affiliated with Student Affairs, Academic Planning and Budget, and the College.

Sampling and response: In contrast to the surveys conducted in 2002 and 2003, all UCLA undergraduate students were sent an email invitation to participate in UCUES 2004. Despite extensive efforts to promote the survey, UCLA’s response rate for the 2004 UCUES survey was approximately 20%, down significantly from the 36.6% response rate in 2003. (Results of a follow-up study of the reasons for the relatively low response rate are available upon request.) However, because of the census sample design, the total number of UCLA respondents was well over 5000 in 2004, compared to approximately 700 in 2003.

Based on a comparison of the characteristics of UCUES respondents with those of the entire undergraduate population (see “Academic, Personal, and Family Background – Demographics,”), the respondent group appears to be fairly representative of the undergraduate student body in terms of class standing; entry status (direct/transfer), and college or school of enrollment. Respondents were slightly more likely to be at the younger end of the age range (18 or 19) and to have a GPA over 3.5. The difference between women and men in response rates (64% vs. 36%) is even greater than the difference between them in the undergraduate population (57% vs. 44%). Broken down by race/ethnicity, there is a wide range of difference in the respondent group’s representativeness: Chinese/Chinese American and White/Caucasian students are overrepresented (by 2.8% and 1.4% respectively). In several cases, under representation of students from other groups – including those who identify themselves as Black/African American (by .4%), as Chicano/Mexican-American (by 1.1%), and by Latino/Other Spanish American (by .6%) is of concern because their small numbers make it difficult to draw conclusions based on the survey data.

Content: UCUES 2004 questions cover the following areas.

Academic, Personal, and Family Background – Demographics
Academic, Personal, and Family Background – Personal History

A complete list of questions and response options is available in the appendix.

Results: The above areas form the basis for the organization of the results reported in the following pages. Note that only responses for close-ended questions are included in this summary, although open-ended responses are available. Data on utilization and assessment of student services (Section X) is compiled under separate cover.

Two types of comparative data are provided. The section on demographics related to academic, personal, and family background allows comparison with the UCLA undergraduate population as a whole. The remaining sections allow for benchmarking with systemwide results that have been created by averaging the average for each of the eight participating campuses. This “mean of the means” reporting strategy was elected because it is our understanding that all campuses will be using the eight-campus average, assuring consistency across the UC system. Although this approach can’t be used to envision an “average UC student,” it does prevent the results for larger campuses unduly swaying the overall average. In almost all cases, removing UCLA from the eight-campus average does not make a large difference.

Highlights From these basic findings, we can get some sense of UCLA students’ characteristics and experiences.

UCLA students come from a wide range of cultural and economic backgrounds.
o One in four UCLA students was born outside the United States, and over half report that both of their parents were born in other countries. (Q45, Q46)
o Just under half (49%) of UCLA students learned English only as a first language. (Q44)
o 15% of UCLA students report that their parents’ total annual income (before taxes) was less than $20,000 in 2003, and 8.4% reported that their parents had an income over $200,000 that year. (Q49)

The survey offers different ways to explore students’ academic engagement and satisfaction.
o Students report spending an average of 14 hours a week in classes or labs and of 12 hours a week in study and other out-of-class academic activities. (Q1)
o 9% report thinking that they should have spent “somewhat” or “much” more time on coursework in the previous year. (Q14)
o 42% report finding a course so interesting that they did more work than was required. (Q15)
o 26% report “often” or “very often” “working harder than they ever thought they could to meet an instructor’s standards or expectations.” (Q15)
o 71% are at least “somewhat satisfied” with the overall quality of faculty instruction. (Q32)
o 93% are at least “somewhat satisfied” with their overall academic experience. (Q33)

There is a remarkable similarity between results for UCLA and the eight campuses as a whole, in terms of students’ personal backgrounds, their academic experiences in college, and their perceptions of campus life. Nonetheless, our students are distinctive in a number of areas. In particular, UCLA undergraduates are notably more likely to:
o
Have been born outside the United States (25%, compared to 21% on average among all eight campuses). (Q45)
o
Have first learned to speak another language only or in addition to English (26%, compared to 21% on average among all eight campuses). (Q43)
o
Work for pay on campus (35%, compared to 28% on average among all eight campuses). (Q1)
o
Perform community service (52%, compared to 45% on average among all eight campuses) (Q2)
o
Participate in student clubs or groups (56%, compared to 48% on average among all eight campuses) (Q2)
o
Strongly agree that, knowing what they know now, they would still choose to UCLA (39%, compared to 32% on average among all eight campuses) (Q23)
o
Play a leadership role in student government (6%, compared to 3% on average among all eight campuses). (Q4)

The greatest value from UCUES 2004 will be obtained by exploring these data in depth – by investigating whether undergraduates’ experiences vary and if so, in what ways. For example, academic departments may choose to examine whether their majors share a distinctive pattern of experiences or perceptions. Offices providing student services may look at whether there are gaps in those who are aware of their services or whether differences in utilization correlate to students’ personal characteristics or background. And administrators responsible for academic policy or co-curricular programming will be interested in whether transfer students are gaining the same benefit from their UCLA careers as those who come directly from high school.
